Responsible breeders work hard to select for the healthiest and best personalities in their breed. They know the characteristics and needs of their type of cat and are eager to educate you. They screen their cats for genetic diseases. If you can, spend an afternoon at a cat show to look at different breeds and to talk to their breeders. Check the the calendar schedules of the Cat Fanciers Association, and of The International Cat Association.
You often have the advantage of knowing both parents of the kitten you are considering but sometimes the father is a "rolling stone". The home-like environment of this source is often family-centered, calm, safe and clean.
