Puppies - Choosing the Best Puppy
The pick of the litter
- Choose the puppy that will walk up to you, likes your touch AND is happy to walk away from you. It does not shy away or growl when looked at briefly in the eyes.
- Do not choose the puppy that sits in the corner or avoids people. Do not rescue this one. This puppy may have fear issues.
- Do not be fooled by the puppy that "chooses you" – comes up to you and pushes the other puppies away. It is too dominant and will be difficult to train.
- Watch this informative video before you bring the puppy home. Topics include safety, what you need to buy for your puppy, and more.
What are the parents and the environment of the puppy like?
- Calm, safe and clean?
- Chaotic, dirty, and a place where the Mama dog has to protect her pups from danger? The emotional trauma of this may lead to lifelong issues.
- Are the parents of the pup friendly, relaxed dogs who are well bonded to their humans? This puppy is related to them and temperament is genetically influenced.
A healthy puppy is important
- No coughing or discharge from their noses (worry about distemper)
- No diarrhea or vomiting (possible giardia or parvo or other diseases)
- No weakness – puppies should alternate between playfulnessand eating to sleep.
- No sign of skin disease – nice soft hair coats without sores, hair loss or itchiness
